Cacao was brought to Tanzania by German colonists in the 1880s. These original groves have been supplemented and re-planted through various development projects in the past 75 years. The Kokoa Kamili Cooperative pays its farmers more than 200% above the commodity market price, and also invests heavily in schools, roads, wells, and other infrastructure across their cacao-farmer communities.
